The latest report published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows an overall improvement in Tripura’s law and order situation, with several major categories of crime recording a decline between 2022 and 2024.
As per NCRB statistics, a total of 58,85,867 cognizable crimes were registered across the country in 2024. This included 35,44,608 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with 23,41,259 cases under Special and Local Laws (SLL). Compared to 2023, the country recorded a reduction of 3,55,702 cases, marking a 6 percent decline.
In Tripura, the total number of IPC/BNS and SLL cases was 4,532 in 2022. The number increased to 5,002 in 2023 but dropped notably to 4,033 in 2024. The state also achieved a charge-sheeting rate of 79.7 percent in 2024, reflecting improved efficiency in police investigations.
The NCRB report further revealed a continuous fall in crimes against senior citizens. Such cases declined from 12 in 2022 to 10 in 2023, and further down to 5 in 2024.
Incidents of atrocities against Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) remained negligible in the state. Two cases were reported in 2022, while no incidents were recorded in either 2023 or 2024.
Economic offences displayed a mixed pattern over the three years. The state registered 242 such cases in 2022, which decreased to 198 in 2023 before slightly rising to 201 in 2024.
Murder cases showed fluctuations during the period. Tripura recorded 109 murder cases in 2022, which came down to 101 in 2023, but increased again to 116 in 2024.
Kidnapping and abduction cases, however, showed a sharp decline in 2024. The number rose from 105 in 2022 to 132 in 2023, before falling significantly to 50 in 2024.
Cyber crime cases remained mostly stable over the years. The state reported 30 cyber crime cases in 2020, 36 in 2022, and 33 in 2023, indicating only minor variations.
Crimes against women also registered a gradual decline, reducing from 752 cases in 2022 to 716 in 2024.
Offences against the state decreased from 30 cases in 2022 to 16 in 2023, before slightly increasing to 22 in 2024. In crimes involving foreign nationals, only one case was reported during the entire period, and that incident occurred in 2023.
Overall, the NCRB data points to a mixed but generally positive trend in Tripura’s crime scenario, with notable improvements in several sensitive areas despite fluctuations in serious offences such as murder.
