Four police personnel attached to Bishalgarh Police Station have reportedly been closed following allegations surrounding the disappearance of a large quantity of gold jewellery that was allegedly seized during a police search earlier this year.

The personnel include Bishalgarh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bijoy Das, Second OC Supratim De, Sub-Inspector Banijay Reang, and Constable Bahar Mia. In connection with the incident, Bishalgarh Police Station Case No. 73/2026 has also been registered.

The controversy reportedly began in February, when a family from the Sonamura-Melaghar area was travelling towards Agartala with family gold ornaments, allegedly intending to sell them to meet the medical expenses of an ailing relative.

According to the complainants, their vehicle was stopped by police near Bishalgarh College. During the search, police allegedly recovered more than three kilograms of gold jewellery from the vehicle.

The family has further alleged that the vehicle was taken to a nearby tea garden and subsequently brought to Bishalgarh Police Station. They were reportedly questioned for several hours about the jewellery. Although the family members were later allowed to leave, they allegedly found that the gold ornaments were no longer inside the vehicle.

The allegation of missing gold subsequently triggered serious questions over the conduct of the police personnel involved. However, the exact quantity of jewellery, the circumstances surrounding its disappearance and the validity of the allegations remain subject to investigation.

The complainants reportedly approached the authorities initially but claimed that no satisfactory action was taken. The matter later reached the Tripura High Court. According to reports, the High Court directed the registration of an FIR against the Bishalgarh police station OC and two police personnel of SI rank. The court also directed that a competent Crime Branch officer be assigned to investigate the allegations.

Following the court's intervention, investigators reportedly examined CCTV footage from the police station, official records and other relevant documents. The roles of the police personnel connected with the incident were also scrutinised. Senior police officials are understood to have questioned the personnel concerned as part of the investigation.

In the latest development, the Home Department has reportedly ordered the closure of the Bishalgarh OC, Second OC, an SI and a constable.

The action has sparked considerable discussion within police circles and raised questions over the alleged handling of the seized jewellery. The complainant family and members of the public are now awaiting the findings of the ongoing investigation, which is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the gold and determine responsibility, if any.
