The foundation stone for the development and beautification of a waterbody located behind New Star Club at Durga Chowmuhani, under Ward No. 18 of Agartala Municipal Corporation, was laid on Friday at a brief programme attended by civic representatives and local residents.

Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA of the 7-Ramnagar Assembly constituency, Dipak Majumder, attended the programme as the chief guest. Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, Corporator and Central Zone Chairperson Ratna Dutta, along with other dignitaries, were also present.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Dipak Majumder said the restoration and development of the waterbody would serve a dual purpose—protecting the city’s natural environment while creating a valuable public space that could be utilised for various social, community and welfare activities in the future.

He said several waterbodies across Agartala had remained neglected and underutilised for years. Following the BJP government’s assumption of power, efforts were undertaken to identify such waterbodies and initiate measures for their restoration, preservation and systematic development, he added.

The Mayor emphasised that protecting waterbodies and simultaneously making them beneficial to citizens is an important priority of the government. He stressed that the preservation of these natural resources would not only help maintain ecological balance but also contribute to creating a cleaner, greener and more sustainable urban environment.

The civic initiative was welcomed by local residents, who expressed hope that the project would significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of the locality while transforming the neglected waterbody into a useful community space. They also appreciated the efforts to preserve the city’s water resources and make them more accessible and beneficial to the public.
