In a major advancement for healthcare in Tripura, doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital have successfully carried out the state’s first uterine Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) embolization, a highly complex minimally invasive procedure.

A 38-year-old woman from Demchara in Dhalai district was admitted to GBP Hospital with severe abdominal pain and heavy vaginal bleeding. After evaluating the critical condition, Prof. Dr. J. L. Baidya from the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department coordinated with interventional teams from radiology and cardiology to arrange urgent treatment.

Doctors confirmed a uterine AVM and proceeded with an endovascular embolization procedure. During the intervention, multiple coils were deployed in the right uterine artery along with other feeding vessels supplying the malformation. The procedure, lasting nearly three hours, was completed successfully without the need for open surgery.

The operation was led by interventional cardiologist Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi, Head of the Cardiology Department, with support from Dr. Rakesh Das and Dr. Manna Bhattacharya. The anaesthesia team included Dr. Rimjhim Chakma and Dr. Monimoy Debbarma, while other medical staff from cardiology and technical units assisted throughout the procedure.

Hospital authorities, including Medical Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami and RMO Dr. Bikash Debbarma, facilitated the procurement of rare coil implants required for the life-saving intervention.

The patient has recovered following the procedure, which was performed free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat health scheme. Officials have described it as a significant milestone for advanced interventional care in the state, marking the first successful case of its kind in Tripura.
