After completion of legal procedures, the body of a missing young man, Nityananda Malakar, was finally returned to India from across the border on Thursday through the Monu Land Customs Station in Kailashahar.

The handover process was carried out in the presence of officials from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Bangladesh Police, Kailashahar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tapas Malakar, DCM Hemanta Dhar, along with other administrative officials. The deceased’s mother, brother, and other family members were also present during the formalities.

According to family sources, Nityananda Malakar, approximately 30 years old, was a resident of Ward No. 15 in Kailashahar Municipal area’s Durgapur locality. He lived with his elderly mother, four brothers, and their families. His elder brother stated that on May 9, Nityananda was called out from home by two acquaintances, Montosh Malakar and Bijoy Num, after which he went missing.

Following his disappearance, the family conducted extensive searches and lodged a missing person complaint at the Kailashahar Police Station. The two friends, when questioned, reportedly denied having any knowledge of his whereabouts.

Meanwhile, reports surfaced on social media that the body of an unidentified young man had been recovered from the Monu River under Kulaura Police Station in Bangladesh. Based on this information, the family initially identified the body as that of Nityananda Malakar, which was later confirmed through legal procedures.

After the completion of formalities, the body was handed over to Indian authorities at the Monu Land Customs point on Thursday evening in the presence of Bangladeshi and Indian officials. The family members later formally identified the body.

Police stated that the body will be handed over to the family after the post-mortem examination is completed.
