Tripura has recorded a significant decline in its unemployment rate over the last six years, staying consistently below the national average, according to the Department of Employment and Manpower Planning.
Quoting the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, officials said the state has witnessed a steady improvement in employment indicators.
In 2018-19, Tripura’s unemployment rate was 10%, compared to the national average of 5.8%. The figure dropped sharply to 3.2% in 2019-20 and remained unchanged in 2020-21. It further fell to 3% in 2021-22, reached 1.4% in 2022-23, and stood at 1.7% in 2023-24, while the national average during the same period was 3.2%.
Officials attributed the improvement to the state government’s recruitment initiatives and alternative employment generation programs.
“Since 2018, 19,810 candidates have secured government jobs through a transparent recruitment process. To ensure fairness, the government set up the Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT), under which 4,417 candidates have already been appointed in Group-C and Group-D posts,” a senior official said.
The Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) has also been conducting examinations regularly to fill vacancies across departments, while the Teachers’ Recruitment Board recently announced 700 posts for graduate teachers. Several other recruitment processes are in progress.
Beyond government jobs, Tripura has emphasized private-sector employment. Between 2018-19 and 2024-25, the state organized 102 job fairs under the National Career Service (NCS) scheme, facilitating employment for 2,231 candidates in private organizations. As per the NCS portal, 7,010 youths with Class VIII qualifications have registered for jobs, with registration open to all at district employment centers.
With the steady decline in unemployment, coupled with ongoing recruitment drives and job fairs, officials believe employment opportunities in Tripura are expanding at a promising pace.
