The sudden and suspicious death of BJP councillor Rahul Kishore Roy has triggered widespread tension and political uproar in Dharmanagar, with family members and locals alleging foul play behind the incident.
Roy, a councillor of Ward No. 5 under Dharmanagar Municipal Council and Mandal President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, was found hanging inside the bathroom of his residence on Monday, shortly after the announcement of by-election results. A saffron scarf was reportedly tied around his neck when the body was discovered.
The incident has raised serious concerns among residents, many of whom are questioning the circumstances leading to his death. Roy’s family has alleged that he had been facing continuous threats and intimidation following the election results.
According to his mother, Roy had expressed fear earlier in the day that their home might be attacked. She recounted that a group of individuals arrived at their house in the afternoon and demanded that Roy be handed over to them. When she refused, they allegedly used abusive language against her son.
She further claimed that the same group later convinced her to open the gate under the pretense of showing respect, but instead insulted Roy again. Distressed by the situation, she said she pleaded with them to spare her son before they eventually left.
The family also alleged that the attackers returned at night and carried out a bomb attack on their residence. Soon after this incident, Roy’s hanging body was found inside the house.
The death has led to strong reactions from the local community and BJP supporters, who claim that Roy may have been either murdered or forced to take his own life due to sustained mental harassment. Roy’s mother publicly named several individuals, including Bablu, Nayan, Hirak, Pablu, and Bablu Purkayastha, accusing them of being involved in the threats.
Police reached the scene soon after the incident, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination. An investigation is currently underway, but no arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
Protests erupted across Dharmanagar on Tuesday morning, with residents and BJP workers blocking roads and demanding immediate action against the accused. Demonstrators also called for the presence of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee at the site.
BJP district president Kajal Das was present during the protest. Despite heavy deployment of security personnel, authorities struggled to control the situation as protesters continued their agitation, even placing the body at the blockade site.
Political observers note that tensions in Dharmanagar have been high since the death of former MLA Bishwabandhu Sen, leading to factional divisions within the party. Sources indicate that Roy had also been an aspirant for the party ticket in the by-election, which was ultimately allotted to another candidate.
Following the election results, it is alleged that internal rivalries intensified, with one faction exerting pressure on the other—circumstances that may have contributed to the tragic outcome.
Roy is survived by his pregnant wife, and his death has left his family and the local community grieving, while demands for justice continue to grow.
