Tripura Member of Parliament and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Wednesday met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in New Delhi to review the progress of key national highway and infrastructure projects in the state.
During the meeting, Deb underscored the challenges posed by heavy monsoons in Tripura and stressed the urgent need for constructing sustainable Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) roads that are resilient to the region’s climatic conditions. He said that ensuring durability and long-term usability must be a top priority in future construction projects.
Highlighting the need for accountability and quality assurance, Deb informed the Union Minister that a high-level inspection team will soon be deputed to Tripura to evaluate the standard of ongoing works. The team will assess areas where construction quality is in question and recommend necessary corrective measures, including punitive action where required.
A major demand long raised by locals—an efficient drainage system along the Shantirbazar stretch of National Highway-8—has now been formally included in the Ministry’s annual plan, Deb added.
Among other key infrastructure priorities discussed were the timely construction of RCC bridges over the Gomati and Muhuri rivers, and fast-tracking the Agartala-Sabroom approach road to ensure its completion by November 2025.
Deb also urged the Ministry to ensure that all 11 ongoing national highway projects in Tripura be completed within stipulated timelines while upholding the highest quality standards.
