Tripura University has introduced a new Undergraduate Programme in Journalism and Mass Communication under the IMD for the academic session 2026–27, opening new avenues for students aspiring to build careers in the media and communication sector.

The newly launched programme aims to provide professional and skill-based education in journalism, digital media, filmmaking, photography, public relations, advertising, broadcasting, corporate communication, and content creation.

The initiative has been approved under the leadership of Tripura University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Debabrata Das, reflecting the university’s focus on expanding multidisciplinary, employment-oriented and industry-relevant education.

The introduction of the undergraduate course follows continuous efforts by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication to make professional media education accessible to students immediately after higher secondary education. Dr. Sunil Kalai, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, has played a key role in promoting the expansion of media studies and strengthening the department since the launch of the Master’s programme in 2009.

The UG programme has been designed to equip students with practical skills in reporting, multimedia storytelling, mobile journalism, photography, video production, podcasting, advertising, public relations, digital marketing, media entrepreneurship, communication research, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence in media.

Over the years, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tripura University has produced professionals working in various fields, including print media, television, digital platforms, public relations, government communication, filmmaking, academia, and development sectors.

With the rapid growth of digital platforms and the creative economy, the university expects the new programme to provide students with strong academic knowledge along with practical exposure and career opportunities in the expanding media industry.

Tripura University has invited applications for admission to the Undergraduate Programme in Journalism and Mass Communication under IMD. Students who have completed Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalent qualifications and have an interest in storytelling, creativity, communication, and media are encouraged to apply.

The university said the launch of the programme marks a significant step towards strengthening professional media education in Tripura and empowering the next generation of journalists, filmmakers, digital creators, and communication professionals.
