Nine persons, including six men and three women, have been arrested in connection with the brutal attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Ashabari in Boxanagar, Sepahijala district, on November 2, Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma said on Tuesday.
Briefing the media, the SP said the incident took place at around 9 am yesterday when BSF personnel deployed at the border were performing their duties. During patrol, they noticed an alleged smuggling attempt in the bordering area. When the personnel challenged those involved, a scuffle broke out, during which the alleged smugglers pelted stones at the BSF personnel and attempted to attack them.
The SP said that BSF personnel subsequently seized a consignment of ganja allegedly being smuggled. However, those involved initially fled the spot and returned later with others, attempting to block the road.
The situation further escalated when an Assistant Commandant of the BSF was proceeding towards the area. According to the SP, the officer and accompanying personnel came under a brutal attack, during which their weapons were also allegedly snatched.
“Two BSF constables and an Assistant Commandant sustained serious injuries in the assault. Following the incident, police and BSF personnel rushed to the spot, rescued the injured personnel and shifted them to a hospital for treatment”, said SP.
Condemning the attack, Debbarma described the incident as extremely serious and unacceptable.
He said the police were treating the matter with utmost seriousness and had registered a case against those involved.
"Following the incident, we conducted raids and arrested nine persons, including six men and three women, who were directly involved in the attack. They will be produced before the court," the SP said.
He further assured that all those involved in the incident would be identified and brought under the purview of the law.
