BJP Announces 45 Candidates for AMC Polls; Mayor Dipak Majumder to Stay Out of Electoral Race

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its first list of 45 candidates for the upcoming Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Election 2026, setting the stage for an intense political contest in the state capital. The candidate list was released by the party's Tripura State Executive Committee on Tuesday, covering 45 of the corporation's 51 wards. The remaining six candidates are expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Addressing the media after unveiling the list, BJP State President Abhishek Debroy said the party had undertaken a careful selection process, considering organisational dedication, political experience, public acceptability and representation from different sections of society.

One of the major highlights of the announcement was the decision not to field sitting AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder in the upcoming civic polls. Explaining the party's decision, Debroy praised Majumder's contribution to the development of Agartala over the past five years, stating that he had worked with efficiency and commitment to improve the city's infrastructure and civic services. Although Majumder will not contest the election, he will continue to contribute to the city's development and serve as a patron of the Agartala Municipal Corporation.

The BJP State President also clarified that the party's central leadership has decided against fielding sitting MLAs in Urban Local Body elections, including Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Village Committees. According to Debroy, elected legislators already shoulder considerable responsibilities in their respective constituencies, alongside other organisational commitments, making it important to provide opportunities to other dedicated party workers.

Elaborating on the candidate selection strategy, Debroy said the BJP had placed particular emphasis on grassroots-level workers, including Prishtha Pramukhs and Shakti Kendra-level functionaries. Women and young leaders have also received significant representation, with special consideration given to candidates in the 20–40 age group.

The party has also attempted to bring professional diversity into its candidate list. Apart from regular political workers, nominees include doctors, advocates, engineers and retired teachers, reflecting the BJP's intention to involve people from different professional and social backgrounds in civic administration.

Debroy further confirmed that three seats have been allotted to alliance partner Tipra Motha Party as part of the electoral understanding for the upcoming municipal polls. The remaining six BJP candidates will be announced on Wednesday, completing the candidate selection process for all 51 wards.

Responding to a question about the next Mayor of Agartala, Debroy maintained that the party would take a final decision only after the election results are declared. He indicated that the leadership would assess the electoral outcome before deciding on the next Mayor.
