In a significant step towards improving flood control infrastructure, the Tripura Government has approved the acquisition of nearly 2.9 acres of land in Agartala and Pratapgarh under West Tripura district for the expansion and reinforcement of the Howrah River embankment.

The proposed project involves strengthening the right-bank embankment from Adarsha Pally to the Pratapgarh RCC Bridge, a stretch considered vulnerable during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding.

The approval follows a detailed review by an independent multidisciplinary Expert Group constituted under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RFCTLARR) Act, 2013. After examining the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) report, the panel endorsed the project, citing its long-term benefits for public safety and flood mitigation.

According to officials, the enhanced embankment is expected to provide stronger protection against flooding, reduce damage to nearby residential areas, and improve the overall resilience of the region’s infrastructure. The project is also anticipated to support planned urban development in adjoining localities by creating a safer environment for future growth.

While recognizing that land acquisition will affect certain landowners, the Expert Group noted that all eligible individuals will receive compensation and rehabilitation assistance as mandated under the RFCTLARR Act.

The panel concluded that the anticipated public benefits, including improved flood management and community safety, substantially outweigh the social impacts associated with the acquisition process.

The West Tripura District Administration has stated that copies of the government’s decision, along with the Social Impact Assessment and Evaluation Reports, have been made available at designated government offices and public notice boards to ensure transparency and public access.

Once implemented, the project is expected to strengthen flood preparedness measures in Agartala and contribute to sustainable urban development across the surrounding areas.
