The Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) on Thursday said no major complaints have been received regarding the filing of nomination papers for the upcoming Village Committee elections, though a few minor incidents were reported and resolved promptly.

State Election Commissioner P K Chakraborty said the overall situation remained peaceful and the commission had not received any written complaint from political parties or candidates alleging that they were prevented from filing nominations.

“Some candidates were prevented from filing nomination papers on the premises of the Returning Officer. However, after our intervention, they were allowed to submit their nominations,” Chakraborty said.

The Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are scheduled to be held on September 28.

The nomination process began on September 1 and ended on September 8, while scrutiny of nomination papers was conducted on September 9. September 11 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature.

Polling will be held in 587 Village Committees, covering 2,634 constituencies and 4,597 seats, the SEC said.

Chakraborty said adequate security arrangements were being made for the elections, with personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Tripura Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to be deployed across the state.

He said the Centre had initially directed the deployment of 24 CAPF companies in Tripura. Following a request from the state government, the Centre subsequently approved an additional deployment, taking the total to 74 CAPF companies.

“These forces will be deployed in sensitive areas as well as other locations to maintain law and order. Police have already started area domination exercises,” Chakraborty said.

The SEC also said there was no concept of model polling stations for the elections. Training of polling personnel is scheduled to begin next week as preparations for the September 28 polling gather pace.
