An incident involving the recovery of an abandoned newborn near a Durga Puja mandap adjacent to Pecharthal market sparked tension and concern among local residents on Friday night.
According to information available, the baby was spotted by passers-by at around 9.30 pm on Friday. Realising the situation, they promptly alerted the police, following which personnel from Pecharthal police station and fire service officials rushed to the location and rescued the infant.
The newborn was immediately shifted to Pecharthal Hospital for medical care. Subsequently, at around noon on Saturday, officials of the Unakoti District Child Protection Unit took the baby to a shelter home to ensure proper care and protection.
Sources said the infant’s health condition was stable. However, the circumstances under which the newborn was left near the puja mandap remain unclear. Further details regarding the incident are awaited.
