The Congress is preparing to step up its political campaign across Tripura, with three All India Congress Committee (AICC) observers scheduled to visit the state from October 27 to 29 to oversee a series of meetings in all nine organisational districts.
Announcing the schedule on Friday, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha said Gajendra Pratap Singh, Pradeep Jain and Deepak Sharma would hold discussions with district and block-level leaders, as well as state party functionaries responsible for the respective areas.
Saha said the meetings would centre on the party’s allegations regarding irregularities in the electoral process and its demands for accountability from the Election Commission. The Congress will seek the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the withdrawal of FIRs and the restoration of names allegedly deleted from electoral rolls.
The TPCC chief alleged that the functioning of the Election Commission had raised concerns about democratic rights and electoral fairness. The Congress has also accused the poll body of acting in a manner that benefits the BJP, charges that form a key part of its ongoing political campaign.
Apart from discussing these issues, the visiting AICC observers will work with the state leadership to mobilise party cadres for a proposed Congress rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1. The district-level meetings are expected to focus on strengthening coordination among party units and ensuring greater participation in the proposed gathering.
Saha said the Congress would continue its outreach activities at the block level throughout Tripura until November 25. The observers will review preparations and coordinate with local leaders to ensure that the programmes are carried out according to the party’s plan.
The TPCC president also called on other Opposition parties in Tripura to come together on issues concerning democracy and electoral rights. Through the upcoming meetings and press conferences, the Congress intends to seek wider Opposition participation in a united campaign against what it describes as the misuse of electoral institutions.
The three-day visit is expected to provide organisational momentum to the party’s statewide campaign while helping prepare its workers for the upcoming programmes in Tripura and New Delhi.
