Opposition More Concerned About Power Than Public Welfare: Tripura CM

Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Friday launched a strong attack on the Opposition, accusing it of struggling to regain political relevance and prioritising the pursuit of power over the welfare of the people.

Speaking to the media, Saha alleged that the Opposition had failed to rebuild public confidence through constructive work and was instead relying on political rhetoric, misinformation and protests to remain relevant. He maintained that people were increasingly aware of political developments and could distinguish between genuine public service and political manoeuvring, particularly in the age of social media.

The Chief Minister also criticised the Opposition’s political alliances, alleging that certain forces were pursuing agendas detrimental to the country's interests. He asserted that attempts to influence public opinion through misleading narratives would not yield lasting political gains.

Addressing the Opposition’s demand for the deployment of central security forces during the upcoming local body elections, Saha clarified that the decision rested with the State Election Commission and that the state government had no direct interference in the Commission’s electoral security arrangements.

“Whenever elections are held, the matter comes under the State Election Commission. I have no interference in it,” he said, adding that those seeking additional security deployment should approach the Commission.

Saha further stated that he had asked the Director General of Police (DGP) to coordinate with the concerned authorities, if necessary. He emphasised that decisions on security deployment should be guided by the prevailing situation and the specific requirements of the electoral process.

Referring to the recently concluded village committee elections, the Chief Minister said the polls had been conducted smoothly and their results had been accepted. He cautioned the Opposition against assuming that road blockades and other forms of protest would automatically translate into public support.

“If they think that the people of Tripura are with them simply because they block roads, they are living in a fool’s paradise,” he remarked.

Saha alleged that Opposition leaders were more preoccupied with overcoming their political setbacks than addressing the everyday concerns of ordinary citizens. He asserted that voters could not be influenced indefinitely through political tactics or misleading statements.

The Chief Minister urged Opposition leaders to reassess their political approach and focus on constructive engagement with the public. He maintained that credibility and sustained public support could only be earned through consistent work, accountability and a genuine commitment to people’s welfare.
