Amid ongoing construction of a covered drainage system from Ker Chowmuhani to Bidurkarta Chowmuhani in Agartala, Mayor Deepak Majumdar on Friday visited the site to inspect the progress and address emerging issues.

The Mayor was accompanied by Municipal Commissioner DK Chakma, Smart City CEO Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, and other senior officials.

The inspection came in response to concerns raised by some local residents who believed that the drain was being constructed by encroaching on private land.

Speaking to reporters at the site, Mayor Majumdar categorically dismissed these claims as “completely false and misleading.”

He clarified that no private land was being occupied and that the construction was being carried out within government-marked boundaries.

“In the presence of municipal and Smart City officials, we have clearly informed the residents that no one’s private land is being used for this work,” said the Mayor.

He added that the ongoing infrastructure projects in the capital—including drainage and road improvements—are being carried out on priority as per the direction of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who has instructed that all key development works be completed before the upcoming Durga Puja.

Applauding the efforts under the Smart City Mission, the Mayor emphasized that work is progressing day and night to meet the deadline. However, he also cautioned that the pace of work may be affected by adverse weather conditions.

“No one can control nature. If heavy rainfall continues, it may disrupt the ongoing work,” he said.

The drainage work is expected to significantly improve water management and mitigate urban flooding in one of the busiest corridors of the capital.
