Allegations of financial malpractice have emerged against Axis Bank's Post Office Chowmuhani branch in Agartala after a customer claimed the bank is refusing to return gold ornaments pledged against a loan.
Rana Debnath, the complainant, alleged that he had secured a loan of ₹9.10 lakh from the branch a year ago by mortgaging his gold jewelry. Recently, when he visited the bank to repay ₹10 lakh and retrieve his gold, the bank authorities allegedly stalled the process without offering a clear explanation.
According to Debnath, the bank has been giving him the runaround for the past month. The situation escalated on Wednesday when a security guard reportedly blocked his entry into the branch. Undeterred, Debnath entered the premises and confronted Branch Manager Kaushik Kundu, who asked him to return the following day.
Enraged by the repeated postponements and lack of clarity, Debnath insisted on the immediate return of his gold. The confrontation led to the signing of a written agreement, with the bank committing to resolve the matter at 10:30 am on Thursday.
Debnath, expressing suspicion over the bank’s intentions, warned that he would seek legal recourse if the issue remained unresolved. His claim isn’t the first—recently, the same branch was accused of handing over imitation "City Gold" to a woman instead of her original ornaments.
As complaints against the branch continue to mount, public concern is growing over the lack of administrative intervention. All attention is now focused on the bank’s response this Thursday.
