The critical medical condition of Manashree Chowdhury, a young woman from Tripura battling a rare and complicated disease, drew attention in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday as Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman urged the government and people to unite in raising funds for her treatment.

During the first day of the Monsoon Session, Roy Barman informed the House that Manashree had already received financial assistance from several sections of society. Around 12 MLAs and ministers, along with other well-wishers, have reportedly contributed towards her treatment. However, he said the family still needs more than Rs 4 crore, with the amount required urgently within the next week.

Calling the situation a collective humanitarian responsibility, Roy Barman appealed to people from all sections of society to come forward and help save Manashree’s life. He also urged the state government to explore ways of arranging the remaining funds.

The Congress MLA suggested that the government could seek assistance through the PM CARES Fund, particularly in view of the enormous financial burden involved in the treatment. He expressed hope that Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha would personally intervene to ensure timely assistance.

Responding to the appeal, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said the matter was deeply humanitarian and assured the Assembly that the government would examine all possible options for extending support.

The Chief Minister said efforts were already underway at different levels, with individuals and organisations contributing towards Manashree’s treatment. Given the huge amount required, he said he had personally raised the matter with the Central Government.

Dr. Saha further informed the House that he had spoken to the Union Health Minister regarding the case and that the Tata Group had also been approached for possible financial assistance. He added that he had personally contacted several individuals in an effort to mobilise further support.

Assuring the House that the matter would be discussed again with the concerned authorities, the Chief Minister said the government would take necessary steps to provide whatever assistance was possible for Manashree’s treatment.
