According to initial police reports, the body was found hanging inside a small elevated hut (locally known as a “tong ghar”) in a jhum cultivation field at Ampi. The deceased, estimated to be between 50 and 55 years old, was in a decomposed state. He was wearing a khaki shirt and a blue lungi at the time of recovery.
Local residents have expressed different opinions regarding the identity of the deceased. Some believe he may have been a person who had gone to collect firewood, while others suspect he could have been a jhum cultivator. A bundle of dry firewood was found near the body, adding to the speculation.
Upon receiving information, police from Teliamura Police Station rushed to the spot, recovered the body, and sent it to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Nepal Munda of Teliamura Police Station stated that the body appeared to be approximately eight to nine days old. However, questions remain about how the man could have allegedly hanged himself while in a seated position inside the hut, with a gamcha tied around his neck. Whether the case is a suicide or a planned murder will only be determined after a detailed investigation.
It is noteworthy that the season for clearing jhum land by burning is approaching, which has further fueled speculation. The mysterious circumstances surrounding the death have led to various assumptions among locals—some suspect suicide, while others fear it could be a case of premeditated murder.
For now, police investigation remains the only hope for uncovering the truth behind the incident. Although the discovery has caused panic and curiosity in the area, the situation is currently under control, and residents are awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
