Kriti Devi Debbarman, Member of Parliament from Tripura East, has written to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressing deep anguish over the brutal attack and subsequent death of Tripura student Late Anjel Chakma in Dehradun.
In her letter, the MP highlighted that Anjel Chakma was violently attacked on 9 December and later succumbed to his injuries, calling the incident “deeply distressing” and a matter of serious concern.
She stressed that the incident has triggered widespread fear and anxiety among students and families from Tripura and other North-Eastern states residing in Uttarakhand.
Debbarman stated that immediately after the incident, her office remained in touch with the Uttarakhand government and was assured that an FIR had been registered and necessary action initiated. However, she expressed grave concern over media reports suggesting that the main accused in the case is still absconding.
Urging swift and decisive action, the MP called upon the Uttarakhand government to immediately apprehend the absconding main culprit and ensure strict and exemplary punishment for all those involved in the heinous crime. She also emphasized the urgent need for concrete measures to guarantee the safety and security of students from Tripura and the North-Eastern region who travel to Uttarakhand for education and livelihood.
“This incident has shaken the confidence of families who send their children to other states with the hope of a safe and inclusive environment,” Debbarman wrote, adding that the state administration must send a strong message that violence, discrimination, and brutality will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Expressing faith in Chief Minister Dhami’s leadership, the Tripura MP sought his personal intervention to ensure justice for the victim and reassurance for students from the North-East living in Uttarakhand.
The tragic death of Anjel Chakma has sparked demands for accountability and stronger safety mechanisms for students from minority and North-Eastern communities across the country.
