The Tripura government is preparing to launch a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) facility at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre in Agartala, alongside new ICU services and expanded clinical support, according to Health Secretary Kiran Gitte.

During a recent inspection visit to the centre with senior health officials, Gitte reviewed ongoing infrastructure work, medical equipment, and service readiness. He emphasized the need for strict adherence to equipment maintenance contracts to ensure timely repair and smooth functioning of hospital systems.

He said the Chief Minister has directed the department to expedite the establishment of the Bone Marrow Transplant unit, and preparations are currently underway. Along with this, ICU services are also expected to be launched soon, pending resolution of minor technical and operational issues identified during the review.

The Health Secretary added that the government is strengthening manpower and technical capacity at the centre to ensure reliable day-to-day patient care. He also noted that while day-care cancer services are already functioning in three districts, efforts are being made to reduce patient load at the main centre by improving district-level treatment access.

Gitte further mentioned that night shelter facilities have been introduced at GB Pant Hospital and are planned to be expanded soon. The broader goal, he said, is to increase the overall capacity of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre to better serve cancer patients across the state.
