The procedure, performed free of cost by the hospital’s team of specialist cancer surgeons, has placed the government-run cancer centre among the leading institutions in the Northeast offering advanced minimally invasive cancer surgeries.
A 35-year-old woman from Ramnagar, Agartala, suffering from oesophageal cancer, underwent the successful surgery after experiencing severe difficulty in swallowing food and persistent pain for several months.
The patient visited the hospital on July 2, 2026, where doctors conducted detailed examinations and confirmed the presence of cancer in her oesophagus. Following medical evaluation, the surgical team decided to remove the affected portion through the VATS method.
She was admitted on July 27, and the surgery was successfully completed on July 29 under the supervision of expert doctors from the Surgery Department.
VATS is an advanced minimally invasive technique that uses small incisions, a camera, and specialised instruments to perform surgery, reducing complications and recovery time. Unlike conventional open surgery, which may take around 10–12 hours, the VATS procedure can be completed within 2–3 hours.
After the operation, the patient was kept under observation for two days and was discharged after making a satisfactory recovery.
The patient’s family expressed their gratitude to the doctors and healthcare staff of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre for providing advanced treatment free of cost.
The successful surgery marks another significant step in strengthening cancer care facilities in Tripura and the Northeast region.
