Several Left-affiliated trade unions and farmers' organisations in Tripura have announced a statewide mobilisation in support of the nationwide 'Jail Bharo' movement to be held on August 10, raising issues such as unemployment, labour rights, corruption, and policies affecting farmers and workers.

At a press conference on Friday, CITU State General Secretary Shankar Prasad Dutta said the agitation is being organised under the joint banner of CITU, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), Tripura Khet Mazdoor Union (TKMU), and GMP. 

He said the annual programme commemorates the spirit of the historic Quit India Movement of August 9, 1942. Since August 9 falls on a Sunday this year, the nationwide protest has been rescheduled for August 10.

According to Dutta, trade unions expect participation from more than 10 lakh people across the country. He alleged that despite assurances of employment, job opportunities have continued to decline, leaving a large section of workers and unemployed youth without livelihoods. He also criticised the implementation of the new labour codes, claiming they dilute workers' legal protections and primarily benefit corporate interests.

CITU State President Manik Dey, who was also present at the press conference, accused the Centre of failing to address rising unemployment and alleged corruption. He claimed that public assets were being privatised while the concerns of ordinary people remained unaddressed. He said the organisations have decided to intensify democratic protests, including the "Jail Bharo" movement, to press for their demands.

The press conference was also attended by AIKS leader Pabitra Kar, along with Shyamal Dey and Madhusudan Das, who urged workers, farmers, agricultural labourers and supporters across Tripura to participate in the August 10 agitation.
