Tripura Police were upset after a local court in South Tripura granted bail to seven accused of assaulting an on-duty police officer last night in Belonia.
All seven were arrested today for assaulting OC of Belonia police station Shiburanjan Dey during a Kali idol immersion procession.
The incident had previously led to widespread protests and heightened security measures in the area.
Despite the severity of the charges, including non-bailable sections including132/117(2)/121(2)/324(2)/191(2)/3(5) BNS, the court's decision to grant bail has sparked outrage among the policemen and the citizens as well.
Many have expressed concerns that the ruling undermines the authority of law enforcement agencies and sends a message of leniency towards those who commit acts of violence against public officials.
The assault on OC Dey occurred when he attempted to intervene in a dispute between two groups during the immersion procession. Members of the Oriental Club allegedly dragged him from his vehicle and assaulted him after he ordered the sound system to be turned off to resolve the conflict.
The attack resulted in injuries to OC Dey and prompted immediate police action, leading to the arrest of seven individuals, including key members of the Oriental Club and the Puja Committee.
Following the court's bail decision, internal anger erupted in Tripura, with police personnel and local residents voicing their dissatisfaction.
Local authorities have since increased security measures to maintain peace and prevent further unrest. The situation remains tense, and both the police and the community are awaiting further developments as the matter progresses through the legal system.
The incident has drawn attention to the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order during public celebrations and the importance of upholding the rule of law in such circumstances.
