In a remarkable story of resilience and timely medical intervention, 37-year-old Uttam Kumar Debbarma, a resident of Manu RD Block under Dhalai district, has been declared completely cured of Multi Bacillary (MB) leprosy.

Debbarma had been suffering for a long time from sores and loss of sensation in different parts of his body. His condition worsened due to the lack of proper diagnosis until April 15, 2024, when doctors at Jamirchhara Health and Wellness Center (HWC-AAM) finally identified the disease.

Just two days later, on April 17, 2024, his treatment began at Manu Community Health Centre (CHC). Throughout the long and challenging course of treatment, health workers stood firmly by his side. Community Health Officer Sushmita Pal, Multipurpose Workers (MPWs) Ranjit Namasudra and Mishra Debbarma, along with ASHA worker Rabikanya Kallai, ensured his medicines were taken on time, monitored his health regularly, and provided him with much-needed mental support.

After more than a year of consistent treatment and care, Uttam Kumar Debbarma was officially declared cured on August 26, 2025. Today, he has returned to the mainstream of society and serves as a beacon of hope for others battling the disease.

Expressing his gratitude, Debbarma thanked the health workers and the health department for their dedication. His recovery stands as proof that leprosy is a fully curable disease if diagnosed early and treated on time.

Officials from the Dhalai District Chief Health Office highlighted that this success story reflects not just Debbarma’s determination but also the relentless efforts of healthcare staff in the district. They stressed the importance of raising awareness about leprosy to encourage timely treatment and eliminate stigma.
