The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has issued notices to the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL), and the Tripura State Pollution Control Board, directing them to submit a detailed report by August 29 on measures taken to prevent activities causing serious environmental pollution.
THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh said the Commission received a complaint from Sujit Deb of D.C. Nagar, Mohanpur Sub-Division, alleging severe environmental hazards in Nepali Basti, Beltoli, Palpara, Damdamiya, Sen Para, and surrounding areas.
The complaint stated that improper disposal of hazardous waste had led to an alarming spread of mosquitoes and flies, posing serious health risks to residents.
The Commission also noted continuous dumping of waste—such as rotten fruits, fish, and other materials—in Agartala’s Battala area, which has been severely affecting commuters and local residents.
Before formally taking cognizance, the Commission directed the AMC Commissioner and ASCL Administrator to take immediate steps to clear the waste and prevent further pollution in the affected localities.
“It is needless to say, all concerned authorities are duty-bound to protect the environment, which is essential for public health and well-being,” Justice Lodh stated.
The Pollution Control Board has been added as a party to the case and instructed to submit its action report within the same deadline, outlining measures taken to address the issue.
