ripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Monday said that he would take up the issue of expansion and further development of the Churaibari Check Post in North Tripura district with the Assam Government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure smooth vehicle movement and proper checking.
The Chief Minister made the statement while addressing the media and sharing details of his recent two-day visit to North Tripura district on Saturday and Sunday. He said he stayed overnight in the district during the visit.
“I have received several complaints regarding the Churaibari check post. There is a big difference between hearing complaints while sitting in an office and physically inspecting the situation on the ground. I found that the complaints were genuine,” Dr. Saha said.
He added that the administration has been instructed to immediately address the issues. “The government does not want such irregularities. Strict action has been ordered to resolve the problems, failing which the government will take further steps,” he said.
Dr. Saha pointed out that the Assam side of the border also has a checking point with very limited space, resulting in frequent traffic congestion. “I will discuss with the Assam Government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma how the area can be expanded and developed for hassle-free vehicle movement and proper checking. I will also raise the matter in the plenary session,” he added.
The Chief Minister further said that he received complaints related to stone crushing units in the area. “When I visited the site, I found the environmental conditions to be very poor. As per norms, stone crushing units should be located at least 100 metres away from the National Highway. On enquiring about pollution certificates and other documents, it was informed that these units were set up during the Left Front regime and were not properly monitored,” he said.
Dr. Saha stated that a meeting would be convened to discuss proper regulation and relocation of stone crushing units. He also observed that trucks were carrying overloaded stone materials, stressing the need for reforms in this regard.
During his visit, the Chief Minister also inspected the IOCL depot. “I spoke to the drivers and instructed them not to pay money to anyone illegally and to inform my office if such incidents occur. Such practices will not be tolerated,” he said.
He added that he also interacted with IOCL officials and directed them to ensure transparency and proper functioning in all operations.
