A high-level delegation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) reached Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala on Wednesday following allegations of vandalism at the party’s state office in the Tripura capital.
The incident, allegedly carried out by BJP-backed miscreants, has once again heightened political tensions in the state.
Soon after landing, the TMC delegation — comprising senior leaders, ministers, and Members of Parliament — staged a sit-in protest at the airport premises, accusing the local administration of obstructing their movement.
TMC State General Secretary Kunal Ghosh alleged that the vehicles arranged to take them to the party office were stopped outside the airport and denied entry.
“The drivers assigned to take us to our party office were threatened and prevented from entering the airport premises. Even prepaid transport services refused to assist us. This is deeply troubling,” Ghosh said.
Echoing similar concerns, TMC MP Sayani Ghosh remarked, “We are witnessing a disturbing erosion of democratic norms. Being denied access to our own party office is not just an inconvenience — it reflects the hostile environment we face here.”
The leaders accused the ruling BJP of deliberately orchestrating obstructions out of fear of Mamata Banerjee’s growing influence in Tripura. They reiterated that such actions raise serious questions about democratic freedom and political tolerance in the state.
A large contingent of police and security personnel was deployed at the airport to maintain order. However, no logistical assistance was provided to the delegation.
Later in the day, the TMC delegation managed to reach the party office and would meet Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag and sought an appointment with the Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu.
