Acting on a tip-off, personnel of the 154 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday detained six Bangladeshi nationals, including a child, from Ambassa Railway Station in Dhalai district.
According to reports, the detainees had come to Ambassa with the intention of travelling to Jalpaiguri (West Bengal) in search of work. All six hail from Bagerhat district in Bangladesh.
During preliminary interrogation, one of the detainees revealed that he had entered Tripura illegally about a month ago. He had previously worked at a tea garden in Bangladesh, where he came into contact with a man who later introduced him to another person in Agartala. Following that introduction, the group entered India through Tripura and planned to go to Jalpaiguri for employment.
However, their journey was cut short when BSF personnel detained them at Ambassa Railway Station. The detainees reportedly admitted to crossing the border illegally with the help of an agent, who allegedly took money for arranging their entry.
They also claimed they did not personally know the agent in Jalpaiguri but said their photographs had been sent there beforehand.
Officials from the BSF and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been interrogating the six individuals. They are currently being kept at Ambassa Police Station and are expected to be produced before the court on Monday, sources said.
As of now, BSF authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the incident.
