Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused the water level of the Gomati River to rise, triggering severe riverbank erosion in Wards No. 7 and 8 of Melaghar Municipal Council in Sepahijala district.
The intense erosion along the riverbank has damaged several houses, with some structures already washed away into the river. As the threat of further erosion continues, several families living in vulnerable areas have been shifted to safer locations.
On Monday, Sepahijala District Magistrate Dr. Siddharth Shiv Jaiswal visited the affected areas of Melaghar and inspected the erosion-hit zones in Wards 7 and 8. During his visit, he interacted with affected residents and took stock of their current situation and difficulties.
Officials from the district administration were also present during the inspection. The District Magistrate assured the affected families of all possible support and directed the concerned departments to take immediate steps to address the situation.
Meanwhile, continuous erosion along the Gomati River has created panic among residents living near the riverbank. Local people have urged the administration to take permanent measures to control erosion rather than temporary solutions, so that no family is forced to lose their last shelter in the future.
