Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma on Friday announced that the state has received over Rs 57 crore for the modernisation and comprehensive development of the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary in Sepahijala district.
The announcement came during the minister’s visit to the zoo following complaints from foreign tourists regarding plastic waste and unhygienic conditions within the sanctuary premises.
Taking cognisance of the issue, Debbarma said he personally inspected the area after receiving reports that plastic garbage was scattered across parts of the sanctuary, affecting cleanliness and the overall visitor experience.
“I visited the sanctuary after hearing complaints from foreign tourists. Necessary steps are being taken to collect plastic waste and ensure its safe disposal. It is possible that there were some lapses on that particular day. However, visitors must also act responsibly. The administration and zoo authorities are continuously working to maintain a clean, plastic-free environment so that tourists do not face such inconveniences,” the minister said.
Debbarma further stated that an approved development plan from the Central Zoo Authority is already in place. The funds received under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) will be utilised to upgrade the zoo to international standards.
“The zoo will be developed in every aspect. We are also exploring the possibility of introducing new species from outside the state as part of the modernisation drive,” he added.
