In Agartala, the opposition Congress on Friday organised a protest outside the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee office, accusing the ruling dispensation of trying to enforce Hindi at the expense of regional languages.

Speaking to reporters, party spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said the country is passing through a “difficult phase,” pointing to what he described as economic distress and rising unemployment. He blamed Mohan Bhagwat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the current situation.

Chakraborty alleged that the Home Minister’s recent visit to the state was part of a broader plan related to language policy. According to him, there are attempts underway to project Hindi as the sole national language, a move he termed unconstitutional and unacceptable.

He further claimed that recent remarks by the RSS chief concerning infiltration and linguistic identification were linked to a wider strategy. The Congress leader criticised any initiative that, in his view, seeks to elevate Hindi above other officially recognised languages.

“India’s Constitution recognises 22 official languages, and Hindi is one among them. Imposing one language over others violates the constitutional spirit,” Chakraborty said.

The protest was organised on the eve of International Mother Language Day, which Chakraborty said made the issue particularly sensitive. The Congress also accused the state government of neglecting Bengali and Kokborok, the latter widely spoken among Tripura’s indigenous communities.

Party leaders asserted that they would continue their agitation against any policy they believe undermines or marginalises regional languages.
