Terming the Supreme Court order on street dogs ‘inhumane’ the royal scion of Tripura Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Wednesday urged the apex court reconsider this order and work with animal welfare groups to find a solution.
Pradyot, well-known for his deep love for dogs, has adopted numerous strays both in his palace and at his residence in Shillong. He is often seen raising his voice against cruelty towards these loyal companions, standing as a steadfast advocate for their welfare.
In a statement, Pradyot said, “I strongly oppose the recent order by the Supreme Court directing the authorities to immediately remove all the stray dogs from Delhi NCR within eight weeks. This is not only hasty but inhumane. There is clearly no strategic planning, no logistics check, and most importantly, no consultation with animal welfare organisations, which have the expertise to guide such initiatives in a humane and effective manner”.
He said that the idea of removing animals from the streets without proper rehabilitation or long-term care is a dangerous precedent to set.
“Today, it is Delhi NCR; tomorrow, it could be anywhere in the country. In Tripura, I am personally willing to support animal welfare organisations that are working on building shelters and creating humane solutions for stray animals. We must understand that this world belongs to them too, and it is our responsibility to show compassion, love, and care for all living beings”, said Pradyot.
Pradyot who is also founder of Tipra Motha Party also urged the authorities to reconsider this order and work with animal welfare groups to find a solution that ensures the safety and dignity of both humans and animals alike.
