In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, police at the Baijalbari Naka point of Khowai District late last night intercepted a vehicle transporting Phensedyl cough syrup worth nearly ₹10 lakh. The vehicle was travelling from Dharmanagar to Agartala.

Acting on routine inspection protocols, the police stopped the vehicle bearing registration number TR05 F 1685. Although the driver presented documents claiming the consignment contained medicinal supplies, officers noticed discrepancies that raised suspicions.

“Upon conducting a thorough search, we recovered 1,200 bottles of Phensedyl hidden in ten separate packets,” a senior police official said. “Phensedyl contains codeine, a regulated substance, and is often misused, making it highly sought after in illegal markets.”

Two individuals—identified as Sujit and Papon—have been taken into custody in connection with the case. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to trace the origin of the consignment and uncover the larger network behind its distribution.

Police officials have reaffirmed their commitment to tightening surveillance and taking stringent action against the illegal transportation of narcotic and psychotropic substances across the state.
