The Government of Tripura has removed Gautam Sarkar from the post of President of the West Tripura District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission with immediate effect, following the conclusion of a formal inquiry into allegations of misbehaviour and abuse of position.

According to an official order issued by the Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, the action was taken under Rule 8 of the Consumer Protection (Qualification for Appointment, Method of Recruitment, Procedure of Appointment, Term of Office, Resignation and Removal of the President and Members of the State Commission and District Commission) Rules, 2020.

The inquiry was conducted by the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission after a preliminary scrutiny by the Government of Tripura. The proceedings were initiated on the basis of written complaints submitted by advocates and employees of the West Tripura District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, alleging specific instances of misconduct and abuse of official position by Sarkar.

Following a detailed inquiry conducted in accordance with Rule 9 of the relevant Rules, the State Commission submitted its report to the State Government. In its findings, the Commission concluded that the charges levelled against Sarkar were substantiated.

A copy of the inquiry report was furnished to Sarkar, and he was given a reasonable opportunity to submit his written representation in his defence, in line with procedural requirements.

After examining the inquiry report, Sarkar’s written statement, and the complete case records, the state government determined that the charges stood proven.

Consequently, the Government of Tripura has ordered his removal from office with immediate effect.

The order was issued by Sumit Lodh, Additional Secretary to the Government of Tripura.
