A major crisis was narrowly averted in the capital late Monday night when a gas pipeline was damaged during Smart City construction work.
The incident occurred around midnight in the Motorstand area, where a JCB reportedly struck a TNGISCL gas pipeline while digging, according to sources.
A TNGISCL official rushed to the site upon learning about the incident and expressed strong concern over the lack of coordination. The official alleged that despite repeated requests, Smart City authorities continued excavation work late at night without any prior notice.
According to regulations, TNGCL must be informed before any road-cutting work, so its personnel can supervise and ensure safety.
The official further noted that while daytime Smart City projects are closely monitored by TNGCL staff, no information is provided about night-time operations, making the work extremely dangerous.
He also added that he tried repeatedly to contact Smart City officials after the incident, but calls went unanswered, raising serious concerns about their accountability.
The TNGCL official warned that such uncoordinated work could lead to major accidents in the future, potentially putting city residents at risk. He urged the state Chief Minister to intervene immediately, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Despite the scare, no major accident occurred. However, the incident has once again raised questions about safety measures and coordination in Smart City projects, sparking fear among local residents.
