Former MLA Tapas Dey has urged the Tripura Government to reconsider the proposed location of a new GBP Hospital outlet, planned adjacent to the state’s Cancer Hospital.

In a letter addressed to Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, IAS, Dey appreciated the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure with significant investments from the Centre and ONGC.

However, he raised serious concerns regarding the safety and well-being of patients, healthcare staff, and the general public due to the close proximity of the new facility to the Cancer Hospital’s radiotherapy units.

He pointed out that cancer treatment at the hospital involves the use of advanced radiation modalities, such as Linear Accelerators (LINACs), which emit X-rays and gamma rays. While essential for cancer care, these carry risks if shielding and safety protocols are compromised.

Dey listed several key issues:

  • Radiation Exposure Risks: Vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised patients could face unintended exposure.

  • Environmental and Safety Concerns: The presence of high-energy radiation necessitates stringent controls, and even low-dose exposure over time could have health impacts.

  • Operational Disruption: Radiation therapy sessions may interfere with sensitive medical equipment in the new hospital outlet.

  • Patient Anxiety: Knowledge of the hospital’s proximity to radiation sources could affect public perception and deter patients from seeking care.

Calling for alternative sites, Dey stressed that a safer location, adequately distanced from radiation sources, would ensure both the safety of patients and the smooth functioning of the new unit. He urged the Health Department to consider expert recommendations on hospital siting within the context of radiological facilities.

“I am confident that with your able leadership and vision, the healthcare infrastructure in Tripura will continue to advance in the safest and most beneficial manner for all,” Dey concluded.
