Tripura has completed all preparations for the rollout of Census 2027, which will mark India's first fully digital population census. The initiative is being carried out by the Government of Tripura in coordination with the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Ratan Biswas, IAS, Director of Census Operations, Tripura, announced the schedule and highlighted the major features of the digital census. He also appealed to the media to help create public awareness about the new process.

The Self-Enumeration phase will begin on July 17, 2026, and continue until July 31, 2026. During this period, residents can submit their household details online through the official portal, se.census.gov.in, using OTP-based mobile verification. The portal has been made available in 16 regional languages to ensure wider accessibility.

After completing the online process, every household will receive a unique Self-Enumeration (SE) ID. During the field verification stage, enumerators will simply verify this ID, reducing the time required for data collection.

The second phase, known as House Listing Operations (HLO), will take place from August 1 to August 30, 2026. Trained enumerators will visit households across all eight districts of Tripura to verify information and collect details on housing conditions, availability of essential services such as drinking water, electricity, sanitation and internet connectivity, along with household assets. The survey will include a 33-question questionnaire.

Officials said the entire census exercise will be conducted through mobile applications and web-based platforms, eliminating the need for paper forms. They also assured citizens that all information collected will remain confidential under the Census Act, 1948, with advanced encryption and multi-factor authentication in place to safeguard data privacy and security.
