Nearly two years after cross-border bus operations between Tripura and Bangladesh were suspended amid political instability in the neighbouring country, the service recommenced on Tuesday, signaling a renewed phase of regional connectivity.

A bus carrying nine passengers from Dhaka crossed into India through the Akhaura Integrated Check Post in Agartala, where it was warmly received by Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury. Welcoming the passengers, the Minister described the development as a positive milestone for both countries.

He noted that the bus link, which had previously operated for about eighteen months, was halted due to unrest in Bangladesh. With the formation of a new government there, the service has now resumed, with the bus travelling from Kolkata to Tripura via Dhaka.

Emphasizing the close relationship between the two nations, the Minister said that Tripura shares deep historical, cultural and social ties with regions across the border. He expressed optimism that the renewed connectivity would further strengthen cooperation and people-to-people contact.

He also mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his congratulations to Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tariq Rahman. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar continues to engage with Bangladeshi counterparts to enhance bilateral collaboration.

With the restoration of bus and visa services, authorities on both sides are hopeful that trade, tourism, cultural exchanges and broader economic cooperation will receive a fresh boost, reinforcing the longstanding partnership between India and Bangladesh.
