Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha today said that Assam has shown interest in exporting its surplus electricity to Bangladesh by using Tripura as a transmission corridor.
Tripura has been supplying excess power to Bangladesh since 2016 under a bilateral arrangement. Speaking to the media during a programme for distributing woollen clothes and blankets in Agartala, Dr. Saha said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Tripura recently, during which several key issues were discussed.
One of the major discussions took place at the Churaibari check post along the Assam–Tripura border. Dr. Saha highlighted that the existing road infrastructure at the location is very narrow, causing frequent traffic congestion. He said he requested the Assam Chief Minister to consider widening the road to ease vehicular movement.
Electricity cooperation was another important topic of discussion. Dr. Saha said Assam is also producing surplus power and is eager to export it to Bangladesh. Since Tripura already has a functional system for power transmission to Bangladesh, Assam has proposed routing its electricity through Tripura.
The Tripura Chief Minister also informed that he briefed his Assam counterpart about Tripura’s Memorandum of Understanding with Bangladesh for power supply, which is set to expire in March this year. He reaffirmed that Tripura is committed to continuing electricity exports to Bangladesh after the renewal of the agreement. Once the MoU is extended, Assam will be able to send its surplus electricity to Bangladesh via Tripura.
