The sun in Tripura’s skies is no longer just a gift of nature—it is increasingly becoming a symbol of development. Under the Prime Minister’s “Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana” solar power initiative, the state has achieved a significant milestone: electricity generation has crossed 6 megawatts, marking a historic moment in Tripura’s renewable energy journey.
According to Managing Director of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation, Biswajit Basu, the state is expected to surpass 10 megawatts by March.
The project has received an unprecedented response across the state. So far, 17,131 electricity consumers have registered for the scheme, and 1,762 households have had solar panels installed on their rooftops. These 1,762 rooftops are no longer just brick-and-cement structures—they have become mini power plants, generating a combined total of 6 megawatts of electricity daily.
What was once a concern at sunset—power cuts and darkness—is now a promise of light across Tripura. Beyond illumination, the project is creating new avenues for income. Consumers are not only meeting their own electricity needs but also selling excess power to the state electricity corporation, earning direct financial benefits.
So far, 187 consumers have sold surplus electricity, collectively earning ₹53,514, credited directly to their bank accounts. As a result, solar energy has evolved from an environmentally friendly initiative to a practical contributor to household finances.
From villages to cities, the twinkling solar panels on rooftops across Tripura are speaking a new language—a language of development, self-reliance, and sustainable environmental stewardship. The initiative is teaching citizens how to coexist with natural resources while progressing toward a brighter future.
Through the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Tripura has shown that the light of development is not confined to power lines—it ignites hope, empowers dreams, and charts the path to a self-reliant, green, and sustainable future. With the sun shining brightly in the state’s skies, the future of Tripura looks equally radiant.
