Tripura plans to install over 50, 000 solar plants in 2025

Tripura is making a significant push toward renewable energy, aiming to install 50,000 solar plants across the state in 2025 as part of a broader initiative to promote clean energy.

The announcement was made by Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath at a registration camp for the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Jirania on Sunday.

With 12,800 solar plants already installed, the government is accelerating efforts to help households generate their own electricity, reducing dependence on conventional power sources. “The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, is a game-changer for household energy consumption,” Nath said.

The minister detailed the subsidy structure to encourage adoption, offering up to Rs 85,800 for a 3-kilowatt system, while smaller 1-kilowatt and 2-kilowatt units will get Rs 33,000 and Rs 66,000 subsidies, respectively. A 1-kilowatt plant can generate 100 units of electricity per month, reducing household power bills and enabling consumers to sell surplus energy.

“This initiative is not just about sustainability; it’s about financial empowerment,” Nath emphasized, adding that solar systems can be installed on rooftops, tin sheds, or open spaces and have a lifespan of 25 years.

To maximize outreach, the government is conducting registration camps across Tripura, urging residents to participate in the program. Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, who attended the event as a special guest, praised the initiative, calling it a step toward “energy self-reliance” for Tripura.
