The Twipra Students Federation (TSF), a key indigenous students' organization in Tripura and a constituent of the North East Students' Organization (NESO), has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its movement for the adoption of the Roman script for the Kokborok language.
While the TSF is open to discussions with Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, it maintains that there can be no compromise on its core demand.
Following Friday’s state-wide protests, during which national highways were blocked to press for their demand, TSF Vice President John Debbarma stated on Saturday that the organization remains steadfast in its stance. "The Chief Minister has indicated that he is looking for a solution, and we welcome that. We are ready for discussions, but our demand for the Roman script is non-negotiable. Our movement in Agartala will continue on Monday, and it will be peaceful," he asserted.
The ongoing demand for the Roman script has been a long-standing issue among indigenous Kokborok speakers. John highlighted that various expert committees had recommended the adoption of the Roman script over the years. "This is not a new demand. Multiple committees have studied the issue and suggested that the government implement the Roman script. The government must acknowledge this and act accordingly," he said.
While Friday's protests saw major road blockades, the TSF leader clarified that emergency services were not disrupted. "We ensured that ambulances and emergency vehicles could pass through. There was no intention to create inconvenience for the public," he added.
With the protest set to continue in Agartala, all eyes are now on whether the state government will engage in meaningful discussions to address the demands of the indigenous student bodies.
