Tripura is making significant strides in sustainable rural development with the expansion of its Bio-Village 2.0 initiative.
The state government has already begun work on 24 new Bio-Village 2.0 projects and is set to implement six more in the 2025-26 financial year, strengthening its commitment to eco-friendly and self-sustaining rural communities.
During a press conference, Tripura Science and Technology Minister Animesh Debbarma highlighted the growing interest in the initiative, revealing that a private organization from Pune, Maharashtra, has shown keen interest in executing the project and has already surveyed existing Bio-Village sites.
“Our goal is to establish 5 to 10 Bio-Villages in every block of the state. This initiative is crucial for promoting sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and eco-friendly livelihoods,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the state’s Biotechnology Department has gained national recognition, securing the prestigious Skoch Award-2025 for its innovative College Biotech Club project. The award ceremony is scheduled for March 29 at the Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
Skoch Awards, known for recognizing excellence in governance, environmental sustainability, and technological innovation, assessed nearly 400 projects from 27 states before selecting Tripura’s Biotechnology Department for the honor.
Currently, 17 College Biotech Clubs operate in various degree colleges across Tripura, with plans to establish four more in the upcoming financial year. In a significant expansion, the initiative will now extend beyond general degree colleges to include medical, veterinary, agricultural, fisheries, and other specialized institutions. The financial support for each biotech club has also been increased to Rs 2.5 lakh, aiming to boost research and innovation in these fields.
With these ambitious projects, Tripura is not only enhancing its rural development model but also positioning itself as a leader in biotechnology-driven sustainable growth.
