Leader of the Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhury, today alleged that the seven years of BJP government in Tripura, has make the state a haven for corruption and mismanagement.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Chaudhury, who also serves as the CPIM state committee secretary, asserted that the past seven years under BJP rule have transformed Tripura into a hub of corruption and administrative failures.
"The BJP government has completed seven years in office, yet it has failed to deliver on its promises. Instead, the state is plagued with misrule and large-scale corruption. Before coming to power in 2018, BJP assured the people of 50,000 new jobs. However, instead of employment generation, over 50,000 individuals lost their livelihoods. They had also pledged that their first cabinet meeting would ensure 200 days of work and a daily wage of ₹340 under MGNREGA. This was publicly announced by Amit Shah, who was then BJP’s national president. But where are these commitments now?" questioned the CPIM leader.
He further criticized the previous BJP-led state government under former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb for failing to fulfill promises regarding contractual employment.
"Biplab Deb had assured that terms like ‘part-time’ and ‘contractual’ would be eliminated from government jobs, yet nothing has changed. When we raised these issues in the Assembly, BJP ministers deflected the matter and blamed the opposition instead. They had announced an AIIMS-like hospital for Tripura, claiming that thousands of crores had been sanctioned and land was allocated. But where is that land? Where is the fund? Similarly, they promised to launch ship services on the Gomati River within two years. Has it materialized? With BJP national president JP Nadda visiting Tripura tomorrow, I expect them to answer these questions,” Chaudhury stated.
He also alleged that since 2018, opposition parties in Tripura have been subjected to relentless attacks.
"What we are witnessing today is a new version of Indian fascism. The RSS and BJP have surpassed even Hitler and Mussolini in their tactics. Since 2018, the opposition has faced constant hurdles, and every election has been turned into a farce. Many ministers and MLAs secured their positions undemocratically. Certain sections of the police force are working in collusion with BJP leaders. From Panchayats to the Assembly, corruption dominates every level of governance, with commissions being a prerequisite for any work. Even the condition of national highways is deplorable,” he remarked.
Chaudhury went on to accuse BJP’s ally, Tipra Motha, of engaging in similar corrupt practices in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
"In the TTAADC, Tipra Motha is now mirroring the BJP’s corruption. Recruitment processes there are riddled with irregularities. Local contractors have approached me, complaining about how tender processes are being manipulated. Instead of allowing Tripura’s contractors to participate, bids are going to firms from Shillong, Guwahati, and Gujarat. There is no competition in development—only in corruption, which is evident in the extravagant lifestyles of those in power," he added.
