Tripura is poised to take a significant leap in its aviation infrastructure as the state government pushes for the designation of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport as an Immigration Airport—an essential step toward achieving full-fledged international status.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, speaking at the inauguration of the Domestic Air Cargo Terminal at MBB Airport on Monday, emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding the state's air connectivity.
“With nearly 30 flights operating daily and around 2,000 passengers using the airport, there is a strong case for international operations. During my recent visit to Delhi, I placed multiple demands before the Union Civil Aviation Minister. We are optimistic about his visit to Agartala post-Union Budget to assess the work required for this upgrade,” said Chowdhury.
Currently recognized as a Customs Airport, MBB Airport is now in line for Immigration Airport status—a prerequisite for direct international flights. The state government has taken proactive steps to meet the requirements set by the Centre, including bolstering security.
“The Central Government has indicated that additional manpower from Tripura Police is necessary to facilitate this transition. Our cabinet has already approved an increase in personnel, and 265 CRPF jawans will be deployed at the airport,” the minister added.
The expansion of aviation infrastructure in Tripura is not limited to Agartala alone. Chowdhury revealed that plans are underway to revive the defunct airport in Kailashahar, Unakoti district, with the Union Civil Aviation Minister expected to visit the site soon.
As Tripura strengthens its air connectivity, the anticipated upgrade of MBB Airport could open new avenues for trade, tourism, and regional integration, reinforcing its role as a key gateway in the Northeast.
