Tripura Human Right body seeks DGP’s report over Police inaction in FIR registration

The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a complaint alleging police inaction in North Tripura District and has sought a report from Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan.

The commission has asked the DGP to conduct an inquiry into the matter and submit a report by April 24.

The complaint, sent via speed post, was filed by Sati Rani Goswami, a resident of Gobindapur, Kadamtala, alleging that police personnel at Kadamtala Police Station refused to register her FIR on January 1, 2025. The complaint specifically names Havildar Gayatri Das as one of the officials involved in the alleged refusal.

Additionally, the complainant has moved the Court of the Learned Special Judge, North Tripura, seeking legal intervention in the matter. The THRC, before formally acting on the complaint, has directed the DGP to investigate the claims and submit a detailed report.

The commission's intervention highlights growing concerns over alleged lapses in police accountability and access to justice for citizens in Tripura. The outcome of the inquiry is expected to shape further legal proceedings in the case.
