Two Nigerian nationals were temporarily detained by locals at Shantir Bazar railway station on Friday night over suspicion, before being rescued by the police.

According to reports, an auto-rickshaw driver from Belonia arrived at Shantir Bazar railway station to transport the two Nigerians to Belonia. This reportedly raised suspicions among local residents and nearby auto drivers, who subsequently detained the foreigners.

Upon receiving the information, Tripura Police of Shantir Bazar police station officials, including OC Raju Dutta and SI Sameer Biswas, rushed to the scene. The two Nigerians were brought safely to the police station, where initial investigations confirmed that they were in possession of valid passports and visas.

The police are currently verifying the authenticity of the documents and questioning the individuals. Meanwhile, the auto driver who was transporting them has been arrested and is being interrogated.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer Bappi Derbma informed the media about the incident, emphasizing that the railway station, which lacks a dedicated GRP police presence, is frequently vulnerable to various illegal activities.

Investigations are ongoing.
