In a bid to make the state’s fishermen self-reliant and increase fish production, the Government of Tripura is all set to organize the 4th State-Level Fisheries Festival-2026 on March 13 and 14 at the Children’s Park in Agartala.

This was announced today by Deepa D. Nair, Secretary of the Fisheries Department, during a press conference at the Secretariat.

Highlighting the importance of fish in the local diet, Ms. Nair stated that around 99.35% of Tripura’s population are fish eaters. During the 2024-25 fiscal year, the state produced a total of 89,224.4 metric tonnes of fish and 45.93 crore fish fry. Despite this, there is a deficit of approximately 32,000 metric tonnes compared to demand, which is currently met through imports from Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, and neighboring Bangladesh. However, Tripura ranks second among the northeastern states in fish production.

Speaking about the objectives of the festival, Ms. Nair said it will serve as a platform for fish farmers to showcase and market their produce. The festival also aims to promote the popularity of fish products, raise public awareness about the nutritional and health benefits of fish, introduce modern fish farming technologies, encourage ornamental fish culture, and motivate farmers to take up fisheries.

The two-day festival will feature various departmental stalls displaying information on government schemes and initiatives. Cultural programs are also scheduled each evening.

The press conference was attended by Santosh Das, Director of Fisheries, and Sujit Sarkar, Joint Director, along with other senior officials from the Fisheries Department.
